Find a location for Iliotibial Band Syndrome
ITB Syndrome is a painful overuse condition affecting the iliotibial band, an extension of a muscle located on the outside of the thigh. This can occur from quickly increasing distances with running or biking type activities. Those suffering from ITB Syndrome may feel pain on the outside of the knee or hip that becomes worse with activity.
As the condition progresses pain may be felt during times of inactivity as well. Generally, rest or modified activity, icing for 20 minutes over the painful area and stretching of the hamstrings and outside thigh muscles will help alleviate this condition.
There can be many other biomechanical factors that contribute to this condition which may warrant evaluation by a medical professional to determine the best course of treatment.
Treatment of ITBS begins with proper footwear, icing the area of pain, and a stretching routine. Limiting excessive training, resting for a period of time, and incorporating low-impact cross-training activities may also help. Anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed by your doctor to help decrease the inflammatory response around the area of irritation. If these treatments do not solve the problem, working with our physical therapists to develop a more focused stretching and strengthening routine will help.
