What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

Functional capacity Evaluations are measurements of an evaluee's performance on a comprehensive series of standardized tests, resulting in data that can be interpreted according to the predictive validity of each test. The goal of the evaluation is to determine the evaluee's ability to perform occupational demands, either to a specific job or general occupational requirements. The Functional capacity Evaluation standardized tests form a foundation of data to be interpreted by a health care professional within the context of their professional expertise. The functional assessment is an objective evaluation of the evaluee's physical abilities and includes a pictorial record of each task performed along with detailed reports of the actual test results.

Key Assessment system

The Functional Capacity Evaluation program objectively and efficiently identifies a client's functional capabilities for a safe return to work. The Assessment is performed by experienced certified Physical Therapists who are specially trained and certified in the Key method. Twenty-two work related functions are objectively quantified through the use of standard testing protocols.

These include:

  • Lifting, Carrying
  • Sitting, Standing
  • Head and Neck Mobility
  • Grip and Fine Hand Movements
  • Hand and Body Position Tolerances
  • Squatting, Crawling, Balancing, Kneeling
  • Pushing, Pulling
  • Bending, Stooping
  • Climbing Stairs, Crouching
  • Repetitive Hand and Foot Movements
  • Work Height Levels, Walking Tolerances

An extremely high level of objectivity is achieved by virtue of the fact that the selection of the validity is made by an analysis of the statistics, rather than the therapist's subjective observation.

Documentation

The assessment report contains a functional overview plus a complete narrative summary in an easy to read format. Reports are returned to the referral source in a timely manner, with graphs accompanying an individual's performance to a data bank of others with similar sex, age, and injuries.
